When I stood in front of the 86 1333-3, I immediately felt the history that this locomotive carries. The smell of coal, the quiet hiss of steam and the rhythmic wheezing of the engine it was as if the past came to life before my eyes. But my fascination with steam locomotives began much earlier, in my childhood.
Als ich vor der 86 1333-3 stand, spürte ich sofort die Geschichte, die diese Lokomotive in sich trägt. Der Geruch von Kohle, das leise Zischen des Dampfes und das rhythmische Schnaufen der Maschine es war, als würde die Vergangenheit vor meinen Augen lebendig. Doch meine Faszination für Dampflokomotiven begann schon viel früher, in meiner Kindheit.
As a child, I still remember how I would always lean out of the window to feel the wind on my face. In the curves I could see the steam locomotive puffing powerfully around the corner. I didn't care that my face was covered in soot at the end even if my grandma didn't like it. Who doesn't know that? The grandma who desperately tries to clean your face with a tissue while all you think about is the locomotive. And you know what? Even today I still enjoy doing it just as much. There's probably still a child in me.
Today I'm taking you on a journey to one of the most fascinating steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
Ich erinnere mich noch genau, wie ich als Kind immer aus dem Fenster lehnte, um den Fahrtwind im Gesicht zu spüren. In den Kurven konnte ich die Dampflok sehen, wie sie kraftvoll um die Ecke schnaufte. Es war mir völlig egal, dass mein Gesicht am Ende voller Ruß war auch wenn meine Oma das gar nicht mochte. Wer kennt das nicht? Die Oma, die verzweifelt versucht, mit einem Taschentuch dein Gesicht zu säubern, während du nur an die Lokomotive denkst. Und weißt du was? Auch heute mache ich das noch genauso gerne. Da steckt wohl immer noch ein Kind in mir.
Heute nehme ich euch mit auf eine Reise zu einer der faszinierendsten Dampflokomotiven der Deutschen Reichsbahn.

Even in the rain, the 86 1333-3 made an impressive figure during its presentation on the turntable. The turntable, a fascinating piece of technology indispensable for steam locomotives with trailing tenders, provided the perfect setting for this spectacle. Today, I want to share with you the story of this remarkable locomotive, which has had a long and eventful service life and has been lovingly restored time and time again.
Selbst im Regen machte die 86 1333-3 bei ihrer Präsentation auf der Drehscheibe eine beeindruckende Figur. Die Drehscheibe, eine faszinierende Technik, die besonders für Dampfloks mit Schlepptendern unverzichtbar war, bot den perfekten Rahmen für dieses Schauspiel. Heute möchte ich euch die Geschichte dieser besonderen Lokomotive näherbringen, die eine lange und bewegte Einsatzzeit hinter sich hat und immer wieder liebevoll restauriert wurde.
A Remarkable History / Eine bewegte Geschichte
The 86 1333-3 is part of a series of 35 machines delivered in 1939 by the Lokomotivfabrik Wien Floridsdorf. With its factory number 3211, it was one of a total of 775 steam locomotives of the Baureihe 86 built for the German Reichsbahn between 1928 and 1943. Its service history took it through numerous depots in central Germany, including Chemnitz and Glauchau. It remained stationed in Glauchau the longest, where it was in regular service until 1976. After that, it was preserved as an operational locomotive by the German Reichsbahn and saw use in places like Annaberg-Buchholz and on the Schlettau–Crottendorf branch line.
Die 86 1333-3 gehört zu einer Serie von 35 Maschinen, die 1939 von der Lokomotivfabrik Wien Floridsdorf geliefert wurden. Mit ihrer Fabriknummer 3211 war sie eine von insgesamt 775 Dampflokomotiven der Baureihe 86, die zwischen 1928 und 1943 für die Deutsche Reichsbahn gebaut wurden. Ihre Einsatzgeschichte führte sie durch zahlreiche Betriebswerke in Mitteldeutschland, darunter Chemnitz und Glauchau. Am längsten blieb sie in Glauchau stationiert, wo sie bis 1976 im Regelbetrieb im Einsatz war. Danach wurde sie als betriebsfähige Lokomotive bei der Deutschen Reichsbahn erhalten und war unter anderem in Annaberg-Buchholz sowie auf der Stichstrecke Schlettau–Crottendorf im Einsatz.
Further Stops / Weitere Stationen
At the end of its active service, the 86 1333-3 was sold in 1993 to the Eisenbahn-Verkehrsgesellschaft in Aalen. Its journey continued to the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen and later to the Wutachtalbahn, where it served as a reliable workhorse for special trains. After a comprehensive restoration at the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works, it operated on routes like the Dreiseenbahn and the Höllentalbahn until 2015. Today, the locomotive belongs to PRESS and is once again stationed in Saxony. For special trips, it was temporarily fitted with Witte smoke deflectors and renumbered as 86 1323-4.
Mit dem Ende ihrer aktiven Einsatzzeit wurde die 86 1333-3 1993 an die Eisenbahn-Verkehrsgesellschaft in Aalen verkauft. Ihre Reise führte sie weiter zum Bayerischen Eisenbahnmuseum in Nördlingen und später zur Wutachtalbahn, wo sie als zuverlässige Zugmaschine für Sonderzüge eingesetzt wurde. Nach einer umfassenden Restaurierung im Dampflokwerk Meiningen war sie bis 2015 auf Strecken wie der Dreiseenbahn und der Höllentalbahn im Einsatz. Heute gehört die Lokomotive zur PRESS und ist wieder in Sachsen stationiert. Für Sonderfahrten wurde sie vorübergehend mit Witte-Windleitblechen ausgestattet und als 86 1323-4 beschildert.

I was fortunate to witness the 86 1333-3 on the turntable at the Historic Locomotive Shed in Wittenberge a captivating spectacle that showcased the power and elegance of this steam locomotive. The locomotive slowly turned on the turntable as steam rose into the air, enveloping the surroundings in a mystical atmosphere. It was a moment I will never forget.
Ich hatte das Glück, die 86 1333-3 auf der Drehscheibe im Historischen Lokschuppen Wittenberge live zu erleben ein faszinierendes Schauspiel, das die Kraft und Eleganz dieser Dampflokomotive eindrucksvoll zur Geltung brachte. Die Lokomotive drehte sich langsam auf der Drehscheibe, während der Dampf in die Luft stieg und die Umgebung in eine mystische Atmosphäre tauchte. Es war ein Moment, den ich nie vergessen werde.
