Yes it's given us a really really great opportunity.
Hive still serves a function, with it's many projects, avenues to earn and the reach that the blockchain has. I am happy that Hive is a bastion of light giving those in the poorer countries their first opportunity to live like a normal person and not having to struggle for bread.
What attracted me to Hive was the promise of community. The earnings are secondary to me. When I saw LeoFinance working on bridging the fiat commercial system with the blockchain, i thought it was game over. I used to follow a dude called Kenny on hive, he was real real popular. Kenny somehting....i think he speaks at Anarcopulco (did i spell it right?). He quit Hive like 3 years back cuz of the downvoting prob. Now more corruption's being revealed from within the community and it saddens i.
Blurt has an advantage - it has a relatively unsaturated space. Though Blurt's been around as long as Hive (after the steemit fork), Blurt's not been corrupted as Hive has; there isn't a downvote capability on blurt.blog (side note...why's there a downvote button on blurt.media?). People are really trying to build something here. Also blurt.blog, because of being connected with blurt.media, has the support of peertube and that is truly amazing.
There is only a like / heart button on Blurt.Media
